Passionate Dancer Teaching Others to Make Bold Steps

Meghan Bold, 26, has turned her greatest passion into a full-time career. She began dancing at age six with the world renowned MacCulloch Dancers in Martintown, Ontario. She learned the disciplines of Highland and Step dancing, and later began performing with the troupe at events and eventually touring internationally at folklore festivals. Her experience later led her to tour with the Scottish show A Breathe of Scotland. Today she runs her own Toronto dance class studio, Bold Steps Dance Studio, where she teaches kids and adults the fine art of traditional step dancing. Reporter Eric Emin Wood interviewed Bold about her work and what it took to get to where she is today.

Finding Work on the Reserve

It’s no secret that fast food restaurants, retail and grocery stores have youth workers. According to the Public Service Commission of Canada, about 78 per cent of 15 to 19-year-olds were employed part time. However, part-time jobs tend to have lower wages, zero benefits, and fewer opportunities for promotion than full time jobs. Add on top that 385,100 youth that are unsuccessful in seeking employment. It’s a rough life, but how much harder is it when you’re trying to find work as a Native youth on a reserve? Organizations such as the First Nations and Inuit Youth Employment Strategy (FNIYES) are available to help address the needs of First Nations and Inuit youth in regards to employment.

JobLoft.com Helps Take Job Hunting to New Level

Turning down $200,000 to start up his business was one of the most beneficial decisions Chris Nguyen could have made. The 24-year-old CEO of online job hub JobLoft.com appeared on CBC’s entrepreneurship reality television series Dragons’ Den last fall along with his coworkers, Andy Lai, Lee Liu, and Sundeep Mokha, only to reject the offer presented to them. The company is now doing well, with 5,000 to 10,000 hits a week, and growing.

 
 
Control Your Credit Card Use

With the holidays behind us for another year, the one thing that remains constant is not the cheerful spirit. Instead, it’s back to the influx of bill statements that fill the mailboxes of the majority of Canadians all around the country. Not uncommonly now, the letters demanding I.O.U. payments are addressed to teens and young adults. The culprit of this sudden rise in student debt is a combination of loans, tuitions, living expenses, and, largely, the mismanagement of credit cards. According to creditcards.com, in 2004 76 per cent of undergraduate college students had at least one credit card in their name with an average outstanding balance of $2,169. And it only gets worse.
